The Citizen Science program of the Green Sentinel Environmental Monitoring System continues to bring environmental awareness to the public — this time by engaging more than 300 schoolchildren through hands-on experiences.
Held at three locations in Debrecen — along the Tócó Stream in Józsa, at the Vezér Street reservoir, and near the Wesselényi residential area — the program offered interactive sessions designed to introduce students to the principles and operation of the Green Sentinel system while promoting environmental consciousness.
The students participated in educational activities led by three professionals in the field of environmental science and monitoring.
Miklós Kálmánczi, Head of Communications at KER Debrecen Environmental Monitoring System Development and Operations Ltd., gave an overview of the role of monitoring stations in urban areas. He emphasized that these stations, equipped with modern sensors, provide real-time, accurate data essential for tracking air quality, noise levels, and other environmental indicators in Debrecen. According to Kálmánczi, the city's future depends on science-based environmental protection — a mission in which the Green Sentinel plays a crucial role.
János Géber, Technical Director at the same organization, introduced students to the practical side of environmental monitoring. He demonstrated how the instruments work, how sampling is conducted, and how data is analyzed. The children had the opportunity to see the sensors in action and engage directly with the process, asking questions about data collection and processing. Géber stressed that these measurements are more than just numbers — they help us understand the city’s environmental state and make informed decisions accordingly.
Zoltán Váradi, Head of the nature education center Természettár, gave an engaging presentation on the importance of biodiversity and Debrecen’s unique natural heritage. Through games and hands-on demonstrations, he showcased the rich wildlife found in forests, waterways, and residential areas, highlighting the importance of preserving these ecosystems to maintain nature’s balance. His talk emphasized the essential connection between humans and nature, and the shared responsibility of protecting habitats.
The event wasn't just informative — it was inspiring. The goal of the Green Sentinel is not only to gather and share data but to foster a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens. The students’ curiosity, enthusiasm, and openness clearly demonstrated that they are ready to take part in shaping a greener future for Debrecen.
